Every adult has experienced the kind of mood swings, excitement and curiosity teenage years present a person with as a part of the natural growth but when it comes to managing the lives of one’s own kids, it’s a different ball game altogether. One could easily end up overdoing what is needed of him or her as a parent.

Certain parents tend to think that disciplining is the only viable option to help their teenage kids avoid getting caught up in bad company or bad habits. They fail to understand that as a child grows and experiences a host of physical, mental and psychological changes, the role of a parent also does not remain the same. One needs to adopt more of a friendly approach towards teenagers to know what’s on their mind and help them along their way instead of presenting themselves as an obstacle to the teenage need to discover mental independence.

If your teenage kid feels that he or she is capable of making his or her own decisions, there is nothing outrageous about it. In fact, it is one of the most natural things to happen in the course of time and certainly no need of undue concern on part of the parents, unless, of course, the teenage kid is developing a reckless attitude. Teenage years present an essential phase in the growth of an individual where one could pick up new skills and discover a new aspect of relationships as well.

If you find that your kid is more curious than ever before about matters of a sexual nature and likes to experiment with his lifestyle there is nothing to be alarmed about. You need to take your teenage kids in confidence and let them speak their mind on the issue at hand. Teenagers would certainly find it a lot easier to find a way out of any awkward situations they might put themselves in if the parents are ready to adopt the role of friends and advisors instead of a taskmaster.

There are logical and scientific reasons why your teenage kid might be behaving in a seemingly reckless manner and thinks that he or she is mature enough to deal with situations they have never been exposed to before. As every parent must be well aware, there are certain hormonal changes taking place in the body of a teenager which leads to an increased tendency for mood swings and a heightened awareness of one’s sexual identity. This causes a teenager to be more interested in taking a step forward towards relation ships of a romantic nature.

Brain changes is another thing which can make a lot of difference to the way your child thinks and acts. Scientists believe that the prefrontal cortex is still developing in teenage years. This area of the brain is responsible for weighing the choices one makes and plays an important role in balancing the emotional and impulsive side with objective thinking. Emotional outbursts and a tendency to seek greater reward than one deserves is also a result of brain development to some extent in a teenager.

Sexual activity is a new thing for your kid and would certainly need a lot of emotional support with the issues they might be facing. Changing nature of relationships can be another reason why a teenager might find himself at odds with the parents. If you stress on being an authority figure for your child, it might not be the best thing possible. If there are any behavior issues your child is facing, it’s better to come up with a friendly dialogue to be in a position to understand what’s going on in the mind of your child.

However, one must not construe that the nature of brain development in a teenager only results in negative and irresponsible attitude. On the positive side, the brain changes makes the it act like a sponge which can soak up a lot and retain it for long which is why it is also one of the best times in the life of a person to take up new tasks and learning new things which can be a value addition to the skill set one might have. On the whole, it needs a balanced approach from the parents to help make the most of opportunities teenage years present for a kid and help them deal with any issues in an intelligent manner.
